What is SSAFA Forces Help?

A national welfare charity that helps serving and
ex-Service men and women and their dependant families in need.

SSAFA was founded in 1885 by Major James
Gildea, an officer of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment
In 1997 SSAFA merged with another Service
Charity,The Forces Help Society, to form SSAFA Forces Help

CASE STUDY
Stan, a former soldier, is thrilled with his brand new scooter. After major heart surgery and a stroke, he could not walk far undaided. SSAFA Forces Help raised money to buy the scooter allowing Stan to keep his independence.

..What Does SSAFA Forces Help actually do?

In Northamptonshire, helps families and dependants of anyone who has ever served in the Armed Forces, the Reserves or the Territorial Army
Gives practical help, good advice and help to those in need
Answers over 1000 calls for help in a year
Arranges home visits by trained caseworkers who can help to clear debts or get financial help
Arranges visits by Occupational Therapists who can advise mobility aids and other matters
Visits widows, old and young to give financial advice and support

Help for those who did National Service

National Service was introduced on 1st January 1949 and the very last serviceman left the Army in 1963

Men who did National Service or their wives or widow may be eligible for assistance from SSAFA Forces Help

CASE STUDY
Bill served in the Royal Navy and after retirement from industry, joined SSAFA Forces Help because he wanted to help those in need. He says it can be hard work but gets immense satisfaction when he sees the end result

Can you help us?

Volunteers join us from all walks of life. We need caseworkers to help ex-Service people and their families. Full training is given and the Branch is always there for additional help and support.

From time to time we also need volunteers to help in the Branch office for fundraising, admin or computer work
